Surgical Treatment Options

Because Quality of Life is Important

Although many female pelvic conditions can be effectively treated with non-surgical alternatives, some conditions may require surgery. Dr. Nguyen’s expertise performing surgical techniques have yielded effective results and high success rates.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery refers to several techniques that avoid making large incisions. The benefits include less discomfort, less bleeding, less risk of infection, and a quicker recovery time.

Anterior Colporrhaphy (Anterior Repair)

A vaginal procedure to fix a cystocele (dropped bladder) by repairing the wall between the vagina and the bladder.

Posterior Colporrhaphy (Posterior Repair)

A vaginal procedure to fix a rectocele (dropped rectum) by repairing the wall between the vagina and the rectum.

Hysterectomy (with or without Bilateral Salpingo/Oophorectomy)

Surgical removal of the uterus with possible removal of the tubes and ovaries. A hysterectomy can be done vaginally, laparoscopically, robotically or through an abdominal incision.

Paravaginal Defect Repair

This surgery reattaches the sides of the vagina to the sidewalls of the vagina.

Vaginal Vault Suspension

Surgical repair of vaginal vault prolapse by attaching the top of the vagina to ligaments in the pelvis.

Abdominal Sacral Colpopexy

This operation is performed robotically or through the abdomen to support the top of the prolapsed vagina to the sacrum.

Colpocleisis

Total colpocleisis involves closure of the vagina in patients that have complete vaginal vault prolapse (dropped top wall of the vagina). A Leforte colpocleisis can be performed for patients who have uterine prolapse (dropped uterus). These vaginal procedures can be done as an outpatient under local anesthesia. These procedures are good options for patients that are medically fragile and are not sexually active.

InterStim™ Therapy

InterStim Therapy is an FDA-approved treatment for urinary urgency, frequency, urge incontinence, and retention. The InterStim is a small device that is implanted under the skin of one of the upper buttocks. It works by gently stimulating the sacral nerves to help treat overactive bladder symptoms. This is an outpatient procedure performed under local anethesia.

Tension Free Midurethral Sling

Surgical placement of a small strip of synthetic mesh that is inserted through an incision in the vagina and placed beneath the urethra to treat stress incontinence. This is an outpatient procedure that can be done under IV sedation with local anesthesia.
